Why Whitewater?
 
Educational technology is rapidly changing in new and exciting ways that affect student achievement and learning and staff efficiency, record keeping, assessment, and communication. It is essential that today’s schools adapt to keep up with the changes and to make certain that our students are not left behind when they enter a world filled with technology.

We are extremely proud of the ways WUSD has been able to bring in these new technologies and integrate them into student learning and staff teaching.  We are routinely examining new and up coming technologies to see how they will work in our environment and help our teachers engage students in instruction.  On prime example is our current one-to-one initiative at the High School and Middle School level.  We also currently operate 13 computer labs throughout the district, in addition to 12 carts of technology, including iPads, Windows based laptops, and Chromebooks.  What’s more, our students and staff consistently outperform many districts when it comes to effectively using the technology we have.

The district is serviced by four full-time technology staff members.  The department is headed by the Technology Coordinator.  Assisting in maintaining the hardware and infrastructure of the district is a System Administrator and System Technician.  Providing ongoing professional development related to technology is our Technology Integrator.  The district also has seven technology savants at the district level that provide technology support and training on a building level, in addition to their regularly assigned full-time duties as a paraprofessional or teacher.

When people think of “technology,” they often think only of computers, certainly one important aspect of educational technology. But it’s not the only facet. A sound, updated network infrastructure is crucial to keep everything running smoothly. That means everything from servers, wiring, firewalls, software and filters, to phone and voicemail systems, to Internet access and inter-building connectivity, to centralized accounting, payroll and student data management systems. In the classrooms, requests for scanners, digital video and still cameras, projectors and updated hardware and software have increased dramatically in the last few years. In the ongoing effort to meet Wisconsin & Federal Standards mandated for technology education at the K-12 level, it’s necessary that we meet the demand.


We must empower our teachers to use the latest technology as they work hard to engage our “neomillennial” learners. That adds a professional development piece to the bigger technology “puzzle.” The staff’s daily procedural tasks are greatly influenced by technology, which contributes to greater efficiency, better assessment of student knowledge, and increased communication with parents regarding student progress.

Even our tech-savvy students need training to effectively use the technology tools provided. The district’s major initiative to introduce keyboarding at the elementary level provides the skills students need to be productive computer users. Not that many years ago, the thought of teaching formal keyboarding beginning at the third grade level was unheard of; now it’s become an essential skill our young students need. In fact, in Whitewater Unified School District, students begin becoming familiar with using the computer and keyboard while at the kindergarten level.

Technology has significantly impacted education—from how teachers gather and deliver information to how students obtain and present material for projects and school-related activities. Even students’ learning styles are evolving from where they were in yesterday’s classrooms. WUSD is proud of the numerous ways it has integrated technology into the daily lives of every student and staff member, helping to assure that graduates from Whitewater are prepared for the 21st century.
