District Wellness Policy

The Whitewater Unified School District is committed to providing a school environment that recognizes wellness as essential to overall physical well-being, growth, readiness to learn and academic performance. While families hold the primary responsibility for student wellness, the schools supplement parental efforts to raise children who make healthy life choices. It is the goal of WUSD to establish environments that present consistent messages regarding nutrition, physical activity, fitness, and lifestyle choices that contribute to student wellness and academic excellence.

District schools support student wellness as follows:

  • By providing daily opportunities for physical activity for students pre-K through Grade 12
  • By providing school meals that meet or exceed federal and state nutrition standards
  • By ensuring that foods and beverages made available in WUSD are consistent with current nutritional best practices
  • By including nutrition education in physical education, health education and appropriate family and consumer science courses, and by encouraging all staff to integrate nutrition education when possible
  • By providing students a comprehensive physical education program with opportunities to acquire skills needed to participate regularly in movement and physical activity that promote lifelong fitness
  • By encouraging all teachers to have students participate in physical activities as often as possible during the school day
  • By encouraging all staff to participate in wellness activities and behaviors as they serve as role models for all students
  • By promoting additional opportunities for physical development and fitness through athletic activities and special events
  • By working cooperatively with the City of Whitewater Recreation Department, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and local youth and community organizations, as well as state and national agencies

The Whitewater Unified School District will establish a District Wellness Committee consisting of at least one School Board member, one administrator, one teacher, the Food Service Supervisor, the district nurse, and one parent. The District Wellness Committee will evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of this policy in even-numbered years and will present their findings and recommendations of needed changes to the School Board subsequently.
