Dr. Mark Elworthy
Welcome to The Whitewater Unified School District!
It is a privilege to serve as the District Administrator for the Whitewater Unified School District. Thank you to everyone who has welcomed me to the district since I was offered the job. The opportunity to work and live in a community that has a history of supporting and valuing education was an important factor in applying for the job. The interview process reaffirmed that Whitewater is a good match for my skill set. I believe the Whitewater Unified School District has a bright future with many successes to come.
More about the District Administrator
I am a lifelong resident of Wisconsin and grew up in Eau Claire until going off to college at UW-La Crosse. My parents both worked in education. Dad worked at UW-Eau Claire, and mom primarily taught music in the public schools. I met my wife while pursuing a master’s degree in Natural Resources at UW-Stevens Point. Karen taught elementary school for 12 years and is now an employee at American Girl. We have two high-school-age daughters: Sophia (senior) and Maddie (sophomore).
After student teaching and teaching in Milwaukee, I returned to Eau Claire where I taught science at my alma maters, South Middle School and Eau Claire Memorial. During that time, I also coached track and field and cross country at the middle school, high school, and UW-Eau Claire.
My experiences in teaching, coaching, and participating in a variety of co-curricular activities served as a foundation for developing my leadership skills. My collegiate coaches at UW-La Crosse, Dr. Phil Esten (cross country) and Mark Guthrie (track and field), taught me through their actions and values what exemplifies true leadership. The leadership skills I have acquired over time have allowed me to develop strong community relations resulting in enhanced opportunities for student learning.
My first administrative job was as Assistant Principal at Mayville High School where I was also the Summer School Administrator, District Assessment Coordinator, and School to Work Coordinator. After Mayville, I was the River View Middle School Principal (Kaukauna) prior to serving the last eight years as District Administrator at Wisconsin Heights School District. The best part about being a District Administrator is the opportunity to interact with students, parents, and the community. Hearing people’s stories has energized me to find solutions to help all types of student learners.
I entered the educational profession to make a difference in people’s lives. As a District Administrator, I have the opportunity to connect with a variety of people and forge partnerships. Private/public partnerships are valuable because they connect the school with the community. Both the school and community benefit from a collaborative relationship. Recent partnerships in which I was part of the planning process are: the Wolf Run Trail (connecting the Village of Mazomanie to the Wisconsin Heights Middle/High School); a new middle/high school parking lot entrance; Dane County Mental Health Grant (awarded), collaboratively written with the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District; and the creation of the Wisconsin Heights School District Endowment Fund for teacher mini-grants.
